Renovations

Costing £20,000, the first redevelopment occurred in the Casbar of FiftyFour on Cox Street. A popular ‘between-lecture’ destination, the Casbar now boasts bright coloured walls, extra windows and new flooring, along with new funky lighting and furniture; which is all centred on a custom-designed 50 foot CU sports mural. The developments were focussed on creating a much more inviting and modern space for students to spend both days and evenings.

On the upper ground floor of SU Priory Street, £10,000 was spent on creating the new student shop, Reunion. Reunion has combined the facilities of a student convenience store with a modern coffee shop to create a one-stop environment for all student needs. The shop has a small retail range providing the student essentials and vibrant catering, including handmade sandwiches made to order, smoothies and a range of coffees. It has been designed so all customers get a comfortable seat with a scenic view overlooking the campus.

The final and most expensive of the renovations took place in the Sports Hall, located on the lower ground floor of SU Priory Street, where £160,000 was spent. The works were both structural and aesthetic, including; a new ceiling, new lighting and new storage facilities, amongst other changes. The cost was seen as an investment as the area is widely used, not only by sports teams but for events such as Freshers’ Fair and the All Students’ Meeting.

Speaking about the redevelopments, Students’ Union President, Robert Wilson, told the Source;
“The summer period has been a busy one for Coventry University Students’ Union and has seen several improvements across the most used areas of our buildings.
“We feel that these changes will benefit a wide variety of students who use the facilities, be it regularly or on one-off occasions
“With more practical and modern looking facilities, I think that we are already bettering the student experience.”
