Democracy Fortnight 2009

12th October 2009 10:50 am
Author: Vice President Communications

LogoDemocracy is at the heart of the Students’ Union and the work that we do for students.
Democracy Fortnight 2009 runs from 12-23 October and is one of the most important events in the Student Union Calendar.
Please join our facebook event: HERE
to keep up to date with the latest Democracy Fortnight news.

The fortnight is made up of three components; Union Council elections, Voter Registration and Course Representative elections.

UNION COUNCIL:

Union Council elections are essential to the running of the SU. 72 representatives are voted on to Union Council from across the whole of the student population, with the aim of ensuring every sector has a chance to be heard.
It is the right of every student to have representation at the biggest decision making body of the Students’ Union. Union Council is where policy and motions are voted on to decide the direction the SU will take for the forthcoming year.
Becoming a Union Councillor is a great experience and looks fantastic on a CV. It helps you gain key life skills that will be with you for life. Don’t miss your chance to get involved.

In the October elections, 15 positions are available. These are:

Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Officer
Disabled Students’ Officer
Environmental and Ethical Officer
International Students’ Officer
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans (LGBT) Officer
Mature Students’ Officer
Part Time Students’ Officer
Postgraduate Students’ Officer
Students with Dependants’ Officer
Women’s Officer
5 Non Portfolio Officers

Nominations for the elections close on Friday. Don’t miss out!

For more information, come to the Boardroom of Priory Street SU at 2pm on Wednesday 14 October for an information session, or contact: president.su@coventry.ac.uk.

If you aren’t interested in running for a position, still make sure you vote between 21-23 October. Voting takes place online through www.cusu.org and only takes a minute; make sure you have a say in who represents you. It’s your right and it will affect your Uni experience.

VOTER REGISTRATION:

Coventry University Students’ Union is working alongside Coventry City Council and the National Union of Students (NUS) to ensure that all students in the city are registered to vote in local elections.
It’s your RIGHT to have a say in who is in charge of the local area you live in. Coventry City Council will be holding stalls in the entrance of SU Priory Street throughout the week 12-16 October. NUS will also be holding an information stall at various points throughout the week.
Come on down, find out about your rights and make sure you have your say!

COURSE REPS:

Course Reps are the link between your University course and the Students’ Union. The main reason every student is at University is for their education, so why should you settle for anything less than the best?
Course Reps are essential for resolving issues at a course level; there were almost 600 active Representatives last year who helped solve numerous issues.
It also looks great on your CV.

Students’ Union Representatives will be holding an information stall in your faculty during the week 12-16 October;

Health and Life Sciences: 12/10 in Richard Crossman
Business, Environment and Society: 13/10 in William Morris
Engineering and Computing: 14/10 in Armstrong Siddeley
Arts and Design: 15/10 in Graham Sutherland

Find out about how you can get involved.
Voting for your class Course Rep takes place in your lectures during the week 19-23.
For more information, contact: vpacademic.su@coventry.ac.uk.

Make sure you are involved in the Students’ Union Democracy Fortnight. The decisions you make will directly affect your time at Coventry University, so it is only right you have your say in who represents you at Course, Union and Local Council level.
