Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here is a selection of the most frequently asked questions. If you have a question that hasn’t been answered please get in touch.

Do you have to be a journalism student to write for The Source?
No, not at all. All Coventry University students can write for both the newspaper and the website.

What can we write about?
Anything that Coventry students would be interested in reading can be covered. Take a look around the site for some ideas, but if the thing you want to write about hasn’t already been covered, don’t panic, we are always looking for new ideas. Just think, what do you want to read about? And then write it!

Is there a certain style of writing that we need to copy?
There is no set style that articles have to follow. The only thing that we ask is for basic grammar/punctuation, so proof read articles before sending to make sure there aren’t many spelling mistakes. Then we will house style it for you.

When are the deadlines?
Generally articles will be uploaded weekly on a Monday, which means articles should be sent by the Thursday before to go on that week. However, breaking news and other content may be uploaded before this deadline. Submit as many articles as you want.

Do we get paid for submissions?
Unfortunately we cannot offer anything in return for articles, other than a by-line and that sense of satisfaction you will gain from knowing other students are reading your work. Having articles published also looks great in your portfolio.

I’m not sure where to send my article, should I send it both Source Online and the Source Newspaper?
All articles that are published in the Source newspaper will be uploaded to the website a few weeks after publication so don’t worry about choosing between them. However, there is some content that will only work on the website, (i.e. breaking news and videos). If you’re not sure the best place for your article just put ‘Source’ in the subject and the editors will work together to find the best place to publish your story.

Where do I send my articles?
Please refer to the Contact Us page for details on how to submit articles.

How can I get more involved?
Throughout the year various other positions may become available, such as Sub-editor positions and Editor. Keep checking the website for details.

I work for a company and would like to advertise our services on Source Online, how do I go about this?
Please contact CUSU marketing department on marketing.su@coventry.ac.uk.
