► How to volunteer

Student volunteer at National Volunteer Day 2010

Looking to volunteer? Here's a step-by-step guide to volunteering through CUSU.

1. Complete the online registration form. This will allow us to keep you updated on current opportunities. You will not be able to receive any of the contact details for the volunteer opportunities you are interested in unless you are registered.

2. Browse through the opportunities directory a full list of volunteering projects and more detailed information.

If you’re unsure of anything, check our Frequently Asked Questions section and then, if you’re still not sure, please get in touch.

Your volunteering experience should be enjoyable and one of the best ways to ensure that is to think about the following:

  • What are your interests?
  • What skills do you have?
  • What skills would you like to gain?
  • What is your ultimate goal?
  • What do you hope to achieve?
  • How much time do you have to commit?

3. You can go through the opportunities and select the one’s your interested in (you are limited to five so that opportunities remain for other students). Once you have picked some opportunities, contact us and we will help put you in touch with the organisation(s) you want to volunteer with.

If you would like to volunteer in a school you will need to attend one of our training sessions (these take place in October and November) and complete a CRB form at our office before December.

4. We’re here to help you develop and part of that process is making the contacts yourself. Once you have the organisations contact details, you will be able to apply directly to them. Schools volunteering is, however, the exception so please apply through us.

5. Hopefully you’ve now secured a volunteering placement. The organisation(s) should contact you directly with information of start dates and how many hours they would like you to do.

6. Keep us informed by downloading, completing and returning the following forms:

Placement agreement and induction checklist

Volunteering time sheet (standard email)

These forms help us record your hours so you can gain certificates, accreditation and recognition for your volunteering work.

We’re an award winning department but are always keen to improve. Please download and fill out the feedback form when you’ve completed your volunteering assignment so we can help future volunteers get the most of their volunteer experience.

We recognise your work through:

  • Certificate of Recognition
  • Higher Education Volunteering Awards
  • Young Achievers Awards
  • Volunteering England Gold Awards
  • and an Awards Party each year.
