► CRB Checks & Training

Many of our student volunteers are undertaking their placement as part of a University module, many of these students are considering a career in teaching and intend to gain experience before making a final decision or an application for a PGCE or GTP.

Before students can receive their placement details they must complete a particular process of registering with our department to confirm they are a student. Complete an enhanced CRB check for the purpose of working with children and attend a 2 hour schools volunteering training session.

CRB Checks

All school volunteers must apply for a new CRB check at the start of each University academic year (October) ensuring that all student CRB checks are as up to date as possible. Each CRB is enhanced and for the purpose of working with children.

To ensure that volunteers have shown their CRB check to their placement school and that the placement school have seen and approved the CRB check, all volunteers must produce a CRB approval letter - for a copy of this letter, please click here.

This letter must be signed by an appropriate member of school staff and returned to the Volunteering and Employability office and stored securely for our records.

Schools Volunteering Training Session

Schools Volunteering Training Sessions are optional, but all volunteers are encouraged to come to one as they cover general information about communicating with pupils, expectations of volunteering, placement timeframe, good classroom conduct etc.

In 2009 we also developed a new section of our training with the Coventry Local Authority which covered the subjects of safe guarding children and child protection. This section of the training aims to introduce the subjects, explain why they are crucial to schools and also explains to students who they can turn to for support and advice should they need it.

The training takes place in the Students’ Union at Coventry University and lasts approximately 2 hours and is conducted by the schools volunteer co-ordinator who has been training and placing students in schools for 6 years.

For further information please read our Essential info for schools. Alternatively, for any questions or queries relating to CRB checks, in-house training offered to student volunteers or other matters relating to volunteers in schools, please contact the schools volunteer co-ordinator (Tim Beer) on 024 7765 5216 or email t.beer@coventry.ac.uk
