Rugby League

Coventry University Rugby League (CURL) are a BUCS team that compete in Midlands 1A, one of the highest tiers in university rugby, aswell as the BUCS cup - a knockout competition where every round matters. We are proud of the calibre of player within the team, in recent years fielding 7 professional players on university scholarships (with two being an England students international, and one being an Ireland students international) and multiple regional-level Rugby Union representatives all who have made the successful transition from Rugby Union to Rugby League!

These recent few years have been the most successful in CURL’s history; our most recent success was becoming Midlands 1A Champions in a season where we only lost one match 2017/18 campaign. This season with new recruits and the newly formed Team Phoenix programme - which we are proud to be one of only five clubs chosen for the highest tier of this programme - we hope to become the Champions of Midlands 1A and go even further in the cup.

As mentioned above we are privileged to be considered one of the top five elite sporting societies at Coventry University via our inclusion in the Team Phoenix top tier. This entitles us to free gym sessions with professional strength and conditioning coaches, exclusive workshops regarding sports nutrition and psychology and many other exciting opportunities.

CURL are very proud of their external links outside of the university. We share a huge connection with the professional Rugby League team Coventry Bears, providing a pathway into professional rugby for some of CURL’s players, along with acquiring a current professional player & coach as our manager for the coming season! Having one of the most experienced coaches in university rugby will be invaluable in passing on their playing knowledge/experience to all players, during training sessions.

CURL also has a great social atmosphere; every Wednesday night we have our socials at the Castle grounds pub where we participate in games, themed nights and joint events with other sport clubs. Along with this having the Castle grounds as our sponsor, we often meet up in our own room for various sporting events. Even if you aren’t interested in Rugby our socials are the place to be on a Wednesday!

Please also follow our social media pages for up to date information regarding the club’s affairs and other important matters.
