Boudica Festival returns for a third year, returning to The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, where we will showcase the best up and coming womxn*, and non-binary artists in music.
The festival features specially curated live music over three stages celebrating inspirational womxn and non-binary performers across the music industry. We show the best up and coming womxn performers from a variety of genres, alongside music workshops and stalls from local artists.

With a female focused line up, Boudica Festival (named after the warrior queen thought to have stood her final battle against the Romans just north of Coventry) is a unique event that gives a platform to and celebrates the wealth and diversity of womxn and non-binary talent in the music industry both on the stage and behind the scenes.
Womxn and non binary artists have always been underrepresented in all aspects of the music industry. Low womxn representation is an industry wide problem, with a growing awareness seeing many festivals being called out for their male dominated lineups. The response from some festival organisers has been there are not enough womxn musicians out there to book. Boudica Festival however seeks to change this opinion by showcasing womxn and non-binary musicians from across a wide spectrum of musical genres across 3 stages showing this is more than possible.
This year’s festival will see a new element with the launch of the Music Video Competition, which invites filmmakers/musicians to submit music videos that they have worked on which celebrates womxn in front of and behind the camera. During the festival the shortlisted entries will be screened, followed by the announcement of the best music video which will be judged by an all-female panel of creatives. This year will see three stages of live music including a local artists stage, showcasing the best up and coming talent in Coventry. Alongside the live music there will be DJ and music coding workshops for budding musicians as well as stalls filled with arts and crafts from local artists.
A long term aim, as well as having a stellar female line-up, is to form an all womxn events crew, using the expertise of womxn sound engineers, lighting technicians and stage managers. As well as providing a platform, we want to highlight the opportunities available to womxn within the music industry other than performing.
Boudica Festival is a project run by The Tin Music and Arts, which is PRS Foundation Talent Development Partner.

“As women who have worked in the music and events industries for numerous years, this is a subject that’s very close to our hearts. It is great to see that positive steps are being taken to bring equality to the music industry, however we don’t think this is happening fast enough which is why we want to challenge the festival industry by running a specially curated music festival that showcases the best up and coming female and non-binary artists across a wide range of genres. If we can host an entire festival of female artists what is stopping them from upping their female representation on their lineup?
We hope that the event provides people, whatever their gender, a place to discover new music, try something new at one of our workshops and ultimately inspire individuals to kick-start a career in the music industry!”

Tusks
It’s fitting that Avalanche, the new album from songwriter/producer Emily Underhill, is threaded with uplifting lyrics about knowing yourself and overcoming obstacles. After all, the road to this record was filled with adversity for the acclaimed Londoner, who creates atmospheric, arresting indie electronica under the name Tusks. In January 2018, she suffered a serious elbow break; “I was distraught,” she recalls. “I had to prepare for the possibility I might not be able to play guitar or piano properly again.” 12 months and two operations later, though, comes Avalanche – an album that overspills with grit and glacial beauty. Beloved by Lauren Laverne, Annie Mac, Wonderland, MixMag, The Line of Best Fit, DIY and many more, the musician has big plans for 2019 following Avalanche’s release.

Virginia Wing
Our favourite records are the perfect counterbalance of the considered and the superficial. Virginia Wing both understand and embrace this concept fully as they return with Ecstatic Arrow, an album which finds them in a place of renewed strength, optimism and clarity. Recorded in Switzerland, in the family home of longtime friend and collaborator Misha Hering within the domesticity and gentle routine of communal life, the album represents a world as predisposed to solemn introspection as it is to blithe conviviality. Ecstatic Arrow borrows from the heterogeneous terrain of The Flying Lizard’s Fourth Wall, the exuberant technology assisted pop of Yellow Magic Orchestra and the playful sophistication of Lizzy Mercier Descloux’s Press Colour, arriving at the evergreen intersection of pop music and conceptual art.

GHUM
Driving a post-punk ghost grunge sound from London, UK, GHUM was born after bassist, Marina MJ, posted an online ad looking to start a band. Each member pursued musical projects in Brazil, Spain, Brighton and London and were brought together by a mutual love of The Cure, Warpaint, Pixies and PJ Harvey. GHUM have built up an impressive live reputation playing across the UK and Europe, supporting bands such as Dream Wife and L.A. Witch, and earning praise from contemporaries Soft Kill and Night Flowers.

Joviale
After a year of honing her sound on London’s live circuit, Joviale was introduced to experimental pop producer Bullion (Laura Groves, Westerman, Sampha). Their connection has seen the realisation of an intriguing and ambitious new vision in the current pop landscape.‘Crisis’? EP plays with its listener’s expectations. It’s both colourful and tense, it’s charming, coy, resplendent, rare and unrestrained – sometimes all at once. Dorcha
Dorcha are a genre fluid 5-piece band of synths, strings, guitars, electronics and heavy beats. A dynamic, versatile group with a refusenik attitude, Dorcha obsess over transporting listeners to a pool of shifting, psychedelic experimental song-writing.
Praised by the likes of BBC Radio 6’s Stuart Maconie on the Freak Zone, 2017 saw further progression in Dorcha’s recognition, with a live performance on BBC Radio 3 Late Junction, appearances at Flatpack Film Festival, Supernormal, Supersonic Festival and more.
2018 saw the band’s first UK tour supported by PRSF Women Make Music in promotion of the new single ‘Bruiser’ released on Box Records.

TrueMendous

TrueMendous carefully intertwines the art of storytelling with ear clenching wordplay, bizarre punch lines and in detailed poetry to narrate her work towards her audience over various genre's including: Hip Hop, Neo-Soul and RnB. Recently opening up the UK showcase for Atlanta’s AC3 Festival, TrueMendous has performed at multiple others including: The Great Escape [2019], Lovebox festival, Exit Festival and sea dance festival in both Serbia and Montenegro. She has worked with BBC 1xra and BBC Three and has been featured on various media channels including: SB.TV, Bl@ckbox and Sektion Red. She has toured with Akil the MC in both the French and Swiss alps, performed in Europe,Thailand and North Carolina aswell as having supported a diverse range of US and UK artists including: Jeru the Damaja, Akua Naru, Monie Love and Lady Leshurr. She was also selected to take part in the first all female UK Hip Hop tour across 8 cities on the 'Queens of Art' tour curated by Shay D [2019].

Los Bitchos
Los Bitchos started off as a recording project after listening to a lot of Peruvian instrumental Cumbia from the 60s and 70s (Los Destellos ‘A Patricia’ is the song that got them together as a band), their sound can be described as The Shadows on a Tequila- fuelled field trip to South America. After a year of live shows supporting the likes of The Parrots, TOY, Kikagaku Moyo & The Buttertones and releasing a bunch of singles, the band will be touring the UK in February, supporting International Teachers of Pop and Bill Ryder-Jones whom will also be recording Los Bitchos' EP at the beginning of 2019.

LIINES
LIINES are a post-punk trio from Manchester who kicked off 2019 as main support to Sleaford Mods for their 32 date UK tour, as well as a string headline gigs, finalists at the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition 2019 and a run of summer festival dates - including Glastonbury, Kendal Calling, Bluedot and Manchester International Festival. They released debut album Stop-Start in May 2018, with tracks being championed by the likes of BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson, Chris Hawkins and Gideon Coe, Radio X’s John Kennedy, as well as BBC Introducing Manchester and Amazing Radio. Q Magazine gave Stop-Start 4**** calling it “A very promising debut”. They’ve since released single On and On with more singles and an album number two in the pipeline.
