After a convincing 59-28 win over University of Leicester, Coventry University Womens Basketball have demonstrated a strong presence in Midlands 2A. This week they head down the road to University of Birmingham to take on their 2nd team. We spoke with club president Natalie Cadwallader about this weeks fixture.

A very impressive win last week. What do you feel was the defining factor in your win?

I feel our defining factor in last week’s game was our defence, we stopped the opposing team from getting easy inside shots, and contested all shots taken. We also stopped any outside shots from getting in the hoop. Showing we are a defensive force which is ready to rise to any challenge. We hope to take the momentum from last week’s game and hope it leads to a good result this week.

Has being part of Team Phoenix been a benefit to you?)

Obviously being a part of Team Phoenix has benefited us greatly, giving us strength and conditioning sessions, nutritional advice, game analysis and many more things. These all aid towards developing any player with in this programme. Obviously, we have only been doing it a couple weeks this season but it has also given us a chance to bond as a team and promoted team work. As the weeks have gone on, you can already see and improvement in our girls, and their strength. It has even helped prevent a serious injury already.

Who is your player to watch this week?

I feel Valentina is our player to watch this week. She has shown she is an all-round player, getting 5 of our offensive rebounds out of 15. Getting 4 steals and 3 assists. I feel there is still a lot more to come from this player. In training this week she has shown she is ready to play and with a new found aggressive play. There is still a lot more to come from this player and we hope to see this in the up and coming weeks.
