Calling all sports fans! In a new city with your Saturdays free? Why not take a trip to one of your new local teams and show some support? There are plenty of sports teams based in and around the city, so whatever your sport of choice, there will be something for you!
Coventry City FC – Coventry Building Society Arena
By some way the most famous sports team hailing from the city, Coventry City play in the second tier of English professional football. The one-time FA Cup winners are back playing in the city after two years of exile and are on the up. Students can get discounted tickets with a valid student card, and with a train between the city centre and the stadium on match days it’s a really easy journey.
Coventry United FC – Butts Park Arena
If the journey puts you off, or if your team are a rival of Coventry City, then maybe the city centre-based Coventry United could be for you! Playing at the Butts Park Arena just outside of the city centre, they’re currently playing at Step 9 of the English football pyramid. They often attract a couple of hundred fans and students can watch for £5, so it’s budget friendly too!
Coventry Rugby Club – Butts Park Arena
If football isn’t your thing, then there’s local rugby too at the Butts Park Arena! Coventry Rugby is based there; currently in the second division of the English Rugby Union system, they are looking to get back to the glory days of the 1960s and 1970s! Tickets for Students are £15, so if the egg-shaped ball is more your thing, give it a go!
Coventry Blaze – Skydome
If you are looking for an elite level sports team to support during your time here, Coventry Blaze is where to go! The four-time Elite League champions play their home games at the Skydome in Coventry city centre and often have tickets available through the University. If you’re looking to enjoy something a bit different, Coventry Blaze would be the perfect place to try it!
Warwickshire Cricket Club – Edgbaston
If none of these sports take your fancy, then a little further afield you can find Warwickshire Cricket Club. Based in Edgbaston in Birmingham, the Bears feature some international stars such as Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali and Olly Stone. If you are a cricket fan, it’s the perfect way to enjoy it. England Cricket also play there regularly, so keep an eye out!
