The next event in our 'In Conversation With' series was with the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health.

The Panel consisted of:

  • Jon Andrews – Associate Head of School - Student Experience 
  • Suzanne Hilton- Head of School

Questions were posed to the Panel by our Vice President for Activities, Gabriela Sulikowska.

The event was hosted by Emily Long, CUSU Student Experience Coordinator. Below you can find just some of the conversation points from the event.

Are there any facilities or resources students can use?

One of the great advantages of the School is the Alison Gingell building. The building is great; there is the opportunity to book most of the spaces for extra clinical skills sessions. To do this, students can talk to their course director. We encourage students to make best use of what’s available!

We have a plethora of online resources too. There is the digital learning Kitbag on the student portal, and we are trying to work closely with LinkedIn Learning to give students as broad a range of resources to try and maximise their potential. It’s not only about the physical resources – we have online resources to aid with courses too. We have extremely close links with Health Education England; students will use this throughout their course to complete mandatory training sessions, but they too have a wide range of resource to help supplement student study. Students should be aware of these resources, but if they’re not, we’d encourage them to get in contact with their course teams who will be happy to help.

Are there any non-virtual platforms that allow nursing students to travel to other countries to experience healthcare systems there?

The pandemic has hit us hard in this regard. Previously, we aimed to give students a wider experience and take them on field trips, but this has obviously tailed off. We would love to get this back up and running as soon as possible. We are the top ranked university for sending students on international trips. We haven’t been able to go overseas, so are still doing COIL events online. We have many overseas partners and try to be as collaborative as possible. We believe it’s extremely important to see the differences in healthcare systems across the world. We absolutely plan to pick them up – we are hoping this will be from early next year, but we have to follow the guidance. Course teams will be able to give specific details on trips. The Centre for Global Engagement (CGE) also help us to fund trips for certain students. We recommend students who would be worried about the price of trips to contact CGE. We also found that the collaboration and engagement between international universities online rose greatly during Covid which we hope will continue both online and in person. We feel this gives a more well-rounded education.

When students join their courses, are there any sessions around practical IT resources they should be using to help them in their course?

We are seeing a dependency on technology post pandemic that has challenged everyone. We have the Kitbag, which is designed to solve any technical problems our students may have. Health Education England also provide toolkits for students. A lot of that is already on our website but we want to introduce more. We have a number of courses that are blended or predominantly online courses. If you are one of these students, we would encourage you to get involved with these resources from the beginning. Even if you are a face-to-face student, we recommend students to engage with these resources so that they can understand where they are on a personal level. Post pandemic, we want to continue with a blended learning pattern for students who would like to. If you have any AULA issues, the AULA team are fantastic at assisting with these. You should have learnt during induction about the Kitbag, which will help tailor all the learning required to individuals. There should be an opportunity to learn what you need to learn and give you the insight to what is relevant to you. We realise ‘one size does not fit all’ so it is a helpful addition to our students’ learning.
