Get the most out of volunteering

Coventry University and the Students’ Union have been offering volunteering opportunities in the local community for many years, and there are always hundreds of projects for you to get involved in. Over the past 18 months, a majority of these have been online, but as we start to get back to normal, the number of things you can volunteer for are either back on campus or in the community.

Recently, the university held its first volunteering fair on campus since the pandemic and dozens of organisations came in to talk to students about their work and why the charities need help.

Even before the pandemic, organisations were finding it hard to raise money to maintain their services and that is why our student volunteers play a vital role in keeping the charities afloat.

However, it’s not just the charities that benefit from your work, you do too.

Volunteering gives you experience of working as part of a team. You can pick up vital transferable skills that could make you more employable upon graduation. It can improve the way you communicate with other students and the general public.

You can also apply for the CUSU Leadership Award. There are three levels to the Leadership Award: Bronze, Silver and Gold and these are given on the basis of how much you participate in various extra-curricular activities and the skills you have developed by taking part.

Doing things for others has a positive effect on your wellbeing, especially if you are new to the area and want to improve the life chances for people in your local community. It is also a great way to meet new people and make friends.

A majority of the current volunteering activities are listed on the CUSU website. Once you express an interest in volunteering and sign up, the team will try and match you up with suitable opportunities.

Whether you have a just a few hours to spare or a lot of free time, with hundreds of organisations and charities to choose from, we are sure you’ll find the perfect position to match your skills.

If you would like to find all the current opportunities, then please check out the volunteering pages on the CUSU website.
