Do you remember the Tiger mascot who attended the Sports and Societies Fair during the January Welcome Week? Tiger is Taekwondo's newest and fluffiest member who is here to 'pawdly' represent the club. This special member represents the values we are trying to promote in our club, as well as the idea that students should go beyond their confort zone and open up to new experiences. After all, isn't the university the place of new beginnings ???
This year’s Sports and Societies Fair will certainly remain one of the most memorable events that we had so far. As always, we took it as an opportunity to share with other students our passion for Taekwondo, but this time we tried to go a bit further and bring something new into the scene. After all, our promise is that we train hard, but we are also a fun club.
With this opportunity, we introduced our newest and fluffiest member, our Tiger mascot. To our contentment, the response from the students was mainly positive, with just some instances where our tiger might have slightly ‘scared’ some of those present. Photos, laughs, dances, and taekwondo kicks made the day memorable. Probably the mystery around the mascot has also contributed to this.
Well, this is why we should say a few words about our mascot. The credit of introducing a mascot in the first place goes to the person who is behind the mask. They are a student who enjoys taking creativity to another level and thinking outside the box. While we prefer to keep the identity a secret for now, we can tell you that the tiger mascot was inspired by South Korea’s national animal, the Siberian Tiger. We tried to get a mascot as close to that because we are a Korean martial art, and we would like that, through our martial art, to promote the Korean culture and values as well.
We had a few attempts to name the mascot, something around Tiger, TJ, Taeger and so on, but we couldn’t decide. We are still trying to find the best name for our tiger, so we are open to suggestions.
What next?
Tiger has become an integrated part of the club, so we are planning to have them during some of the training sessions, competitions, socials, and other events. If you would like to meet Tiger again, join us, keep an eye on our social media (@cu_taekwondo/Instagram; Coventry University Taekwondo Club/Facebook), or Sports Coventry (@sport_coventry/Instagram) for updates.
