This day provides the platform “for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide”. This year the World Federation for Mental Health is recognizing “young people and mental health in a changing world”. As students at Coventry University, new and old, return to the world of higher education so to comes the associated stresses of life and learning. Among the deadlines, financial hard-times, social paradigms and all other issues that have come with being a young person in higher education the changing world itself now becomes a barrier to becoming their full potential. For instance with almost 49% of young people in the U.K. going to higher education each year, becoming a prospect for a potential employer can be daunting; as young people must ‘stand out’ against the bevy of peers found in each lecture theatre.
Coventry University is no different in this respect, being in the top 10 institutes of the U.K. for student population size can take away the feeling of individuality and self. However, in its great size lies many incredible opportunities and services that are not available to other institutes. Teams such as Student Advice and Careers, Widening Participation, Volunteering, Communities and many, many more are here, readily available and importantly - validated by every student who comes into contact with them. It is not uncommon for young people to feel like the world keeps changing the rules against their favour with rising fees, and so the importance of these services become more apparent; the information, advice and opportunities for every student to take on are the ways in which we as an institute can say we want to you to succeed!
