About Windband

Who are we?

Windband is a friendly society open to anyone who plays any woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. There are no auditions and we warmly welcome musicians of all abilities. We play a variety of music from movie medleys to classics. We want to keep our society fun and for everyone to feel like their part of a friendly community. Windband aspires to be as inclusive as possible within our incredibly diverse university.

What do we do?

Windband meets very Monday evening to rehearse and prepare for concerts and other events. Dan, our Musical Director runs a two-hour rehearsal with a short break in the middle before everyone heads to the pub for an informal social. Obviously due to current circumstances, we’ll have to operate slightly differently to normal this term. We’re going to be holding smaller, socially distanced sectional rehearsals as well as lots more online content. Make sure you check out our article to see our plans for the next academic year !

Why should you join?

Join Windband if you want to meet other musical people, play some fun music and be part of a friendly community. Windband is a fun, easy-going society where you can go to socialise as well as play some fantastic music. We play a variety of music with varying difficulty levels, so whether you’re a beginner or grade 8 standard, they’ll be something for you! Our membership fee is only £10 for the whole year which is really great value for money. We use the membership money to buy new music and equipment as well as making sure we can afford to run bigger concerts and events.

What have we done in the past?

Every year windband looks for opportunities to showcase the music we have been practicing every semester. Last year included our Christmas concert and performing at the CUSU One World International Culture Night.

Our Christmas concert in December 2019 was held in St. John the Baptist church which is right in the centre of Coventry. This was the first time the society had hired a venue outside of the university and we had a great turn out. We provided festive refreshments and invited the congregation to join in and sing carols with us. It was a really lovely way to end the term and one of our proudest moments for the society!

Windband has also played at the CUSU International Culture night for the past two years. This is such an amazing event which gives students and societies the chance to show off the vibrant cultural diversity at Coventry University. We have loved playing at this event and looking forward to performing for them again!

Although this year will be slightly different, we’re looking into the logistics of having an online Christmas concert. We’re always open to suggestions and new opportunities so we’re excited to see what this new academic year will bring for CUSU Windband!
