Coventry University Taekwondo Club
Taekwondo is a traditional martial art of Korea emphasizing on both discipline and power. Taekwondo has a very controversial history due to its debated origins. It has been constituted as a sport in Korea in the 1950s, but its history is longer than that. The World Taekwondo Federation states that t’aekkyon and its forerunner, subak, are the predecessors of this martial art. This affirmation links the origin of taekwondo with the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo. Nevertheless, it is commonly agreed that Taekwondo derives from the Japanese martial art, Karate. One of the most prominent authors of Korean martial art books, Choi Hong Hi, claims that Taekwondo is a combination of the both ancient martial arts and Karate.
Taekwondo has been an Olympic sport since the 2000 Australian Summer Olympics. It must be mentioned the fact that there are some major Taekwondo styles: Traditional Taekwondo (1946), the ITF or Chang Hon-style (1966), ATA or Songahm-style (1969), Jhoon Rhee-style (1970s), Kukki-style or better known as World Taekwondo or the Olympic style. The last style (WTF) is also the style that is practiced within the Coventry University Taekwondo Society . However, anyone who has trained other styles of Taekwondo before is more than welcome to join us because this would be a very good opportunity for the members to interchange knowledge and to improve together.
