Shout Volunteer

This opportunity is ongoing, with no end date.

At Shout 85258, our trained Shout Volunteers are invaluable and at the heart of everything we do. They are often the first person our texters have spoken to about how they are feeling. They will work to take someone in distress to a calmer place by using our conversation model and skills they're taken through in our online training.
  • Be over 18.

  • Be resilient and mentally robust to help people in distress.

  • Commit to 25 hours of online training and then fulfil 200 total hours of volunteering.

  • Have empathy and be able to be objective.

  • Put your own personal views to one side to help the texter.

  • Have a secure web connection, laptop/computer, a UK or New Zealand phone number and access to a quiet place.

  • Be able to volunteer from the UK or New Zealand.

  • Provide 2 referees and consent to undergo a background check.

Hours per week


Hours details

When exactly you volunteer is down to you but we ask that you give 2-4 hours a week when you have completed training and fulfil a total of 200 hours overall.

Training available

You will need to complete a 6-week/25 hour online training course providing you with the knowledge and skills needed to support those in distress. Crucially, this will include our conversation model and how to manage risk which arises.

Transport details

You will volunteer remotely, most often from the comfort of your own home, so transport won't be needed.

Time commitment

We ask that you commit to 25 hours of online training and then fulfil 200 total hours of volunteering.


On the platform, you will have clinical supervisors supporting you in taking conversations with those in distress. They hold responsibility for risk so they'll help you in managing this. Off the platform you will have coaching teams supporting your wellbeing and growth in your skills.


You will be volunteering remotely so no transport costs will be necessary. We will also organise and cover the cost of your DBS check so there will be no costs needing to be expensed.
