Register to Vote: York & North Yorkshire Mayoral Election

The election for the first York and North Yorkshire Mayor will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024. In order to vote in the election, you must have registered to vote by Tuesday 16 April!

Can I vote in the election?

To vote in this election you will need to be:

  • aged 18 or over on the day of the election
  • a British, Irish, or EU citizen, or a qualifying Commonwealth citizen*
  • registered to vote at an address in the York & North Yorkshire area

The deadline for registering to vote is 11:59pm on 16 April 2024. 

How do I register to vote?

Click here to register online. It will take about 5 minutes. You will be asked for your National Insurance number so try to have this to hand. You can register without your National Insurance number if you don't have one.

If you live in student accommodation and split your time between Scarborough and another location, you can register to vote at both your home address and your term-time address. 

If you have any questions about registering to vote, or will struggle to do so online, contact the electoral services team of your local authority.

How can I find out about the candidates?

The details of the candidates will be released publicly on Monday 8 April. CU Scarborough is hosting a candidate debate on Tuesday 16 April, where attendees can meet the candidates and ask questions. Find  out more about that here.

How do I vote?

Voting will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024. If you are voting in person you will receive a poll card telling you where your polling station is. You must attend this specific polling station in order to vote. The polling station will be open between 7:00am and 10:00pm. You must bring photo ID with you in order to vote. Your details will be checked and you will be provided with a ballot paper where you can cast your vote. The polling station staff will be able to help you if you have any questions. 

If you are voting by post you will receive a ballot paper in the post. You will need to complete the ballot paper and send it back, or drop it off at a polling station on Thursday 2 May.
