Coventry University Rugby League (CURL) are Coventry University’s premier Rugby team. We are part of an elite group of ‘Team Phoenix’ Focus Sports which include: Tennis; Cricket; Mens/Womens Football and Netball. As such, we are able to offer our players a unique University sporting experience. Rugby League is fast paced, high impact and agressive, it is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world, players of the sport, and in particular CURL, work hard, play hard and train harder as a team week in, week out. Joining CURL is your opportunity to be part of a team that will truly enhance your University experience, making friends for life.
CURL 1ST VIII currently compete in the Midlands league, with the second XIII looking to play development fixtures against other local Universities throughout the upcoming season. We have technical training, which focuses on the core skills of rugby league, and team teactics twice a week, on Monday and Friday evenings and play on Wednesday afternoons for the 1st Team and Sundays for the 2nd Team We are fortunate to have a link with Lions Mixed Martial Arts Gym, based in the city centre, which the majority of players use for their Strength and Conditioning training. We also have excellent links with local professional outfit, Coventry Bears who play in the National Conference League. Bears Head Coach Alan Robinson (former CURL/Ireland Students/Great Britain Students Captain) trains CURL and helped lead the side to Midlands ‘A’ league victory as the undefeated champions in 2010/11.
The majority of our team are converted Rugby Union players who have never looked back on their decision to cross codes; University is perhaps the only opportunity most players have to try Rugby League and it is certainly not one to be missed out on!
