Being a School Rep would give me the ideal opportunity to positively impact the quality of the courses delivered in EEC while also offering a fantastic opportunity to take a higher level of responsibility and accountability. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to be involved and make a difference as a School Rep. One particular area I would like to focus on is encouraging more females into the Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive engineering degree courses. I believe there are countless opportunities out there, however we see only 3-10% of these (Mechanical. Aerospace and Automotive) courses being filled with female students. The U.K. currently has the lowest percentage of female engineers in Europe and with an annual shortage of around 50,000 engineers in industry, we as a department can help to fill this gap and further elevate the reputation of Coventry University’s Engineering department. Although there are not a lot of female engineers I feel we can get together and make a greater difference by ignoring stereotypes and instilling confidence in the gems of engineering. This aim can be achieved by empathising with students, showing that we understand issues and barriers faced by female engineers and sharing our own challenges, fears and achievements experienced during our journeys.
