Coventry Flames: 2019-2020 Review

Coventry Flames Basketball have now completed their 2nd season competing in Basketball England's National League (Division 3). After playing in NBL Division 4 in their inaugural season (2018-19), Flames were determined to rise up to the challenge of the higher standards of playing in D3 this 2019-20 season. Unfortunately, the season was just cut short with news of the Covid-19 circumstances, with the last game of the season being void, and the league coming to a close. However, during the competitive battles that Flames had encountered this year, they had proven they were more than capable of competing at these levels, with a 6th place finish within a 12 team league. Ending up just outisde a playoff position, Flames could hold their head high, with the hope of pushing for playoffs and possibly promotion in the forthcoming 2020-21 campaign.

Coventry Flames had a number of players returning to the roster, with local stalwarts including Luis Romero (who led the team as a Player/Coach), Marlon Allison, Tyler Slaymaker, Angus Whittall, and Sam Cardwell. Last years University players of Jad Nemer and Leon Creary, were bolstered by the addition of University performance athletes Elvis Zeiluks, Stephen Akpan, Samuel Sowande, Zaki Sanni, and Sean Ogunnowo. Whilst there was an influx of young, talented players challenging for minutes, in the forms of Chima Effiom, Nafess Nowaz, Lief Redmond, Pierce Carter, and Connor Edwidge. The roster also added it's youngest player in Noah Saa, at just 16years old, but brought a vast array of skills and talents with him which left opposing players catching their breath. Just as the fixtures came thick and fast during the Christmas break, Flames were delighted to be able to welcome back the walking 'double-double' Luke Gregory, who had captained Coventry University's first team previously, but had work commitments keep him away for the first half of this season. Luke was joined by Isaac Saa who came in to bolster the guard rotations. All in all, Flames had once again blended a variety of both local and international talent, whilst helping young, local players find their feet in a competitive National League environment. The additon of being able to recruit skilled basketball scholars from Coventry University's Sports Scholarhsip programme also added a little 'swagger' as the club grew, both in size, following, and reputation.

With the promise of greater things to come, and the relationships growing between Coventry University's Performance Sport programme 'Team Phoenix', the Sports Scholarship recruitment avenues, and Coventry Flames Basketball, the future looks bright for #CoventryBasketball.
