Cllr Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Public Health & Sport, is to take part in the GoRun 5k Fun Run in March 2019.

Cllr Caan joins hundreds of runners already signed up to the Fun Run, taking place as part of the Festival of Running on 24 March alongside the Coventry Half Marathon. 5k runners will set off shortly after the Half Marathon and take in a double loop of the city centre before finishing at the Cathedral.

Cllr Caan said:

I’m really excited to be taking part in the GoRun 5k fun run and want to encourage all of our residents to sign up and do the same. The Festival of Running has something for everyone and is a great way to keep active and stay healthy.

It’s really important that we introduce every person in this city to the joys of sport and physical activity for the long term physical and mental health benefits that being active brings.

The Festival of Running will also provide a fantastic opportunity to bring local communities together and that’s what it’s is all about – coming together, getting active and having fun. With Coventry being European City of Sport for 2019, there’s never been a better time to get involved!

Festival of Running Organiser Millie Mac said:

We’re delighted to have Cllr Caan take part in the GoRun 5k, it’s a wonderful example to set as portfolio holder for Public Health & Sport.

We want the Festival of Running to be accessible to all, and the 5k is a great target for any resident, regardless of running experience. As a Fun Run it’s less serious than the Half Marathon but no less an achievement, and with runners in fancy dress and team entries from local business and schools it promises for a great atmosphere.

We hope Cllr Caan inspires other residents to get active and take part in this celebration of fitness during our year as a European City of Sport.”

European City of Sport will be a special year for Coventry and the perfect build up to City of Culture 2021. A great year of celebration is to be had – showcasing the best of what the city already does, attracting sporting events to the city, supporting grass roots sports clubs in communities, whilst also ensuring that everyone in Coventry has access to high quality and affordable facilities.

The Council are planning to continue to work with partners throughout 2019 and beyond to encourage as many people as possible to get active and healthy.

Entries are still available for the GoRun 5k and the Coventry Half Marathon.
