A big thank you to students and staff who joined us for our recent ‘Hog Friendly Litter Pick’ event on Wednesday 22 September.

Coventry University is taking part in a UK-wide competition to find out which campus can collect the most litter in and around the local community, and although the quantity of litter collected on the day was not an enormous amount (just goes to show how hard our grounds maintenance team work) it was great to see volunteers back on campus again doing something positive to benefit our little spikey friends.

You would have seen on the news over the past few years that the hedgehog population in the UK is decreasing all the time and one of the reasons they are dying is because the thousand spikes on their bodies make them vulnerable to becoming trapped in litter.

We wanted to do our bit to help these little creatures and to make our campus safer and more hedgehog friendly. Our team of volunteers started at the Richard Crossman Building and continued right through to the CU Coventry campus on Mile Lane.

It was good to see volunteers working together again after 18 months of not being physically able to be together.

The litter pick was a wonderful way of getting the University students and staff back to on campus to work alongside each other and it was a great feeling for those who took part.

Not only will the hedgehogs benefit from this event, but all participants will be eligible for a digital certificate just for taking part. You don’t need to be on the winning team to get the recognition you deserve for helping out.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society recognise the need for this kind of work to be undertaken to preserve the population.

Thank you again to those who took part and please do look out on the volunteer pages for other opportunities for future hedgehog friendly litter picks.
